Arrive at Bhutan's only international airport: Paro (PIA). Members of our team will be waiting to welcome you and begin your tour. After arrival, we will have a country orientation followed by cultural sightseeing at the mighty Paro Dzong (fortress). We will then visit the national museum and go for a stroll in local markets.
Acclimatization hike to the Tigers Nest Monastery Or you may also choose to ride a horse on the ascent to rest the legs ahead of the marathon. Later in the afternoon we drive one hour to Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan.
We continue our tour and enjoy a morning drive via the panoramic Dochula pass and then descend into the sub-tropical Punakha valley. In Punakha, we will visit the imposing Punakha Dzong and explore both the marathon routes. Our excursions today will prep you well for the challenge tomorrow. We will then attend the mandatory pre-race briefing and collect our race packet for the Bhutan International Marathon.
Today is your race: the Bhutan International Marathon. The program for the full and half marathons flag off at 8 AM. Both the events finish at the grand Punakha Dzong. In the evening, we attend the awards presentation ceremony and the celebratory dinner hosted by the Bhutan Olympic Committee.
We begin our tour today with the drive from Punakha to Thimphu. While in Thimphu, we will be visiting most of the major areas of interest such as Buddha Point, Thimphu Dzong, and clocktower square. You'll enjoy seeing what life is like in the capital city: where east meets west!
After sightseeing in Thimphu, we drive one hour to Paro. In the afternoon there will be plenty of options to enjoy the sights, visit temples, or hike in the valley to make the most of your last day in Bhutan. The Bhutan Marathon Tours team see you off as you will depart from the airport in Paro tomorrow.
